Amini: Iran blocks social media to stop the protest

   Iranian authorities blocked access to Instagram and WhatsApp after six days of protests over the death of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old who died while in the custody of the moral police for not wearing the hijab correctly.

Amini's death caused great outrage around the world.

According to activists, the woman originally from Kurdistan, a region in the north-west of the country, was shot to death in the head, but Iranian officials denied this and announced an investigation.

   Mahsa Amini's father, for his part, accused the authorities of lying about his daughter's death.

Amjad Amini said doctors refused to let him see Mahsa after she died: "They are lying. They are telling lies. Everything is a lie ... they don't care how much I begged, they didn't let me see my daughter." he told BBC Persia.

The man also reported that when he saw his daughter's body before her funeral it was completely wrapped except for her face and feet, which were bruised: "I have no idea what they did to her," he said. .

   Iranian officials instead said the young woman died after suffering a "heart attack" and falling into a coma, but her family claimed she had no heart problems, according to Emtedad News, an independent Iranian media.

Public skepticism over the officials' account of her death sparked a wave of anger that spilled into violent street protests.

    Since the beginning of the protests - which have affected the whole country, with a toll of at least 31 civilians dead, according to the NGO Iran Human Rights (IHR), based in Oslo - internet connections have been slowed down and access to Instagram and WhatsApp was then blocked.

"By decision of the authorities, it is no longer possible to access Instagram from Wednesday evening. Access to WhatsApp has also been interrupted," reported the Fars news agency.

The measure was taken because of "the actions taken by the counter-revolutionaries against national security through these social networks," Fars continued.

Instagram and WhatsApp have been the most used apps in Iran since the blocking of platforms such as Youtube, Facebook, Telegram, Twitter and Tiktok in recent years.
