As of this Thursday, around 700 students at the New Nikolai School in Leipzig have to stay at home: It is cold in the school building, the heating is defective, and the temperature in the classrooms fell to 18 degrees, according to the school management.
Because "due to the weather forecast with cool nights" it can be assumed that room temperatures will continue to fall, she ordered "home study time" for grades 5 to 10 and grade 11, writes headmaster Heiner Wulfert in a letter to parents and students.
First, the »Leipziger Volkszeitung« reported on the renewed home schooling at the Neue Nikolaischule.
Video conference instead of face-to-face lessons
Pupils should take part in the lessons during the "home study time" via video conferences, excursions and class trips will take place as planned, the letter says.
The reason for the failure of the heating: "Due to a lack of spare parts, the repairs could not be carried out as planned during the summer holidays," writes the headmaster.
The heating should be working again by the end of the month, so that students and teachers can return to the school in October.
