In the Ginnheim district of Frankfurt, 400 primary school children currently have to make do without a schoolyard.
They therefore spend their breaks on the street in front of them.
The city has cordoned off a section - but this is sufficient for a maximum of one class, as a mother writes in an e-mail to SPIEGEL.
"The children literally play on the street between construction vehicles and residents' cars."
Due to construction work in the school building, all classes at the Diesterweg School have moved into containers - these have been blocking the entire schoolyard since the beginning of September.
In between, trucks drive around, concrete mixers roar, pallets with paving stones are stored.
There are also construction site toilets.
Not a place for children to play.
Protest march through the district
As the school parents' council emphasizes, the parents have contacted the city several times and asked for help.
Every Friday morning, elementary school children march through the district in a protest march.
Several regional newspapers reported that ZDF also made a contribution.
In a statement to ZDF, the city of Frankfurt am Main, which runs the school, blames the “difficult market and delivery situation”.
That is why the schoolyard could not be completed in time "despite appropriate efforts".
As the "Frankfurter Rundschau" writes, the city has now promised the parents that the schoolyard should be finished "in the fall".
An exact date is not known.
