(ANSA) - ROME, SEPTEMBER 24 - Joe Biden has assured that the United States and his allies will impose new "rapid and severe" economic sanctions on Russia if it annexes territories in Ukraine, as part of the 'referendum' for which voting continues in the occupied areas until 27 September.
"The Russian referendums are a farce, a false pretext for trying to annex parts of Ukraine by force", said the American president.
Previously, in a joint declaration, the G7 countries had called on "all countries to unequivocally reject these fictitious referendums", "simulacra" that "have neither effect nor legitimacy".
