A ship collision at a particularly narrow point on the Moselle in Rhineland-Palatinate caused a traffic accident on Friday evening.
Around 8:00 p.m. near Briedern (Cochem-Zell district), a passenger cabin ship collided with an oncoming goods motor ship for an unknown reason, the water police said on Saturday.
The freighter then rammed the bank and brought down a protective wall.
A car on the adjacent federal highway 49 was damaged when the driver drove over fallen rocks.
According to the police, no one was injured in the accident, neither on land nor on water.
The cargo ship loaded with around 3,000 tons of ore and the quay wall were "considerably damaged".
The salvage of the freighter is planned for late Saturday evening.
Until then, the Moselle will remain closed to shipping.
The cabin ship was able to continue its journey.
But the freighter is stuck at the bottom of the river.
The police have not yet been able to provide any information on the extent of the damage and the cause of the accident.
