A dramatic development in the case of the Yemeni children: the Ministry of Health and the Institute of Forensic Medicine have updated this evening (Saturday) that in accordance with the law on opening graves of the children of East Yemen and the Balkans, a complete match was found between the genetic profile of the late Yosef Melamed and the genetic profile of his family members.
The results of the tests conducted by the biological laboratory experts at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine were delivered in accordance with the order given in the case and the provisions of the law to the court and through it to the family of the deceased Yosef Melamed.

About a month ago, the Ministry of Health announced that the laboratory at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine succeeded in a precedent-setting manner in producing a genetic profile from the remains taken at the opening of the late Yosef Melamed's grave. Subsequently, the members of his immediate family were sampled and a complete match was found between the genetic profile of the late Yosef Melamed and his family members.

The Ministry of Health states that in this case, the relative preservation of the remains of the deceased and the presence of first degree relatives, allowed the continuation of the identification procedure and a genetic comparison between the family and the remains exhumed.
This is a precedent-setting event after when the tombs were opened in 1997, samples were sent to a world-leading laboratory from which DNA could not be extracted.
"The Ministry of Health and the National Institute of Forensic Medicine will continue to stand by the families and make every effort with the professional tools at their disposal in order to shed light on the fate of their loved ones and try to ease their pain."

"It is important to note, the good preservation of the remains in this case and the presence of first degree relatives are what made it possible to conduct the test in the optimal way and obtain a reliable result."
