"Why would someone build a city in the middle of the ocean?" wonders archaeologist Dr. Patrick Hunt and many others in his field who recently researched the uninhabited island of Nai Madul, located near the island of Pohnpei in Micronesia, off the coast of the Pacific Ocean.
"Why would they build such a city here, so far from everything and any sign of civilization?", Hunt tries to understand.
The strange city, which many locals believe is haunted, was once considered by European researchers to be the eighth wonder of the world and was even called the "Venice of the Pacific".
Until recently, it was not accessible to visitors due to its remote location, and some even compared it to Atlantis, the mythical island that disappeared under the sea.
Researchers believe that it was built in the first or second century AD, but there is no actual evidence for this.

This is what the amazing island looks like from the ground
97 blocks were built on the island, separated by narrow creeks, but the reason for this is unknown.
The city is located more than 2,000 km from Australia and more than 4,000 km from Los Angeles.
"As amazing as this place is when viewed through the satellite images, seeing it from the ground is even more amazing," said Dr. Karen Bellinger, "There are walls here 7.5 meters high and 5 meters thick."

The meaning of the name of the island where the mysterious city was built, Nan Madul, is "the space in between" (Photo: screenshot, Science Channel)
According to the local legend, the city was founded by the twin sorcerers Olishifa and Olusuhpa, who first came to the coral island to cultivate it.
They began to worship Nahnison Sahfu, the local goddess of agriculture.
These two brothers represent the kingdom of Saudlor.
They came to this lonely island in order to expand their empire and brought the basalt rock on a huge flying dragon.
Signs of Saudlar's empire still exist in this island city.
Experts have found places like kitchens, houses surrounded by basalt rock and even monuments to the kingdom.
However, many mysteries remain unsolved even today.

The name of the island where the mysterious city was built, Nan Madul, means "the space in between", which only makes the matter more and more intriguing.
Many people call the place the "City of Ghosts" and the people of Pohnpei refuse to go near it, claiming that the island is haunted and bewitched.
The few who agree to accompany tourists to the island do so only in daylight, and the locals claim to have seen mysterious spherical objects that glow at night.
They believe that those who spend the night on the island do not return alive.
