'The lesson': Israeli society's uncomfortable envy

A lot of emotions stir in me after seeing

(miniseries of six chapters in Filmin), but, among all of them —anger, sadness, anguish and others that live in those harsh semantic fields—, after a while, envy prevails.

An uncomfortable envy, because there is nothing to envy in that world.

I would not want to live in it, the mere idea of ​​seeing myself in a dilemma similar to the one that destroys the protagonists (teacher and student in an institute) disarms me.

I envy the ability of the Israelis to make mirrors where no one looks handsome, I envy their talent for breaking Manichaeism and presenting the unbearable complexity of the world where no one expects to see it, in popular culture, on TV, on the site where everyone world looms.

They have amply demonstrated it: the cinema,

Israeli literature and television are full of deep and ruthless reflections that fan the daily delirium of the country, and they do it with unparalleled crudeness.

I am envious of that: Spanish society would not accept the reflection of those mirrors.

I would break them with a hammer.

In

we witness the collapse of a character who just wants to be decent, fulfill his job as a teacher in a middle-class neighborhood in Israel, be a worthy father and a consistent citizen.

The actor Doron Ben-David (

's Steve , for Israeli TV fans) embodies very well the fibrous fragility of a good man in the good Machadian sense of the word who discovers that being good is not enough and it doesn't matter when the moral compass is broken and no one finds an ethical horizon.

Unwittingly, this horror story says something positive and enviable about the suffocating society that he portrays: that he is aware of her suffocation and is capable of thinking about it and looking at it squarely.
