After the expiry date, Switzerland has to dispose of over ten million doses of Moderna's corona vaccine.
The vaccines are worth the equivalent of 293 million euros.
According to the Swiss Ministry of Health, there are 2.5 million doses from a Swiss Army logistics center and 7.8 million vaccine doses from a depot in Belgium.
There is no alternative to annihilation.
At the beginning of the procurement phase, Switzerland ordered vaccine doses from different manufacturers in order to avoid supply problems and a dependency on individual vaccines that could prove ineffective.
Since then, the country has had a large surplus of vaccine doses.
Around 3.5 million doses of the new, adapted Moderna vaccine should be available for the booster vaccination planned for autumn.
Of around 8.7 million Swiss, almost 70 percent have been vaccinated against the corona virus.
