Haute-Savoie: a magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Mont-Blanc

A "moderate" earthquake of magnitude 4.2, the epicenter of which was located near Mont Blanc, has occurred, indicated the National Monitoring Network.


An earthquake occurred this Sunday morning at 8:18 a.m. in Chamonix in Haute-Savoie.

It would be an earthquake of magnitude 4.2 out of 9 on the Richter scale located at a distance of 4.5 km from the city and at a depth of 5 km.

For the moment, no injuries are to be deplored but several residents claimed to have suffered the tremors.

The epicenter was located near Mont Blanc, said the National Seismic Monitoring Network (Renass).

On the website of the central French seismological office, residents of the Praz district of Chamonix reported that the walls of their house had shaken and that a key had fallen from the lock in which it was inserted.

“I also heard noises coming from the roof, like when pieces of ice come off”, adds a resident of Chamonix.

According to the High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM) located in Chamonix, no intervention took place this morning in connection with this earthquake but a landslide took place in the mountains in the Pratz sector.
