There are nutritional pairings that we were born with, such as soup and almond soup, cornflakes and milk, toast with butter, and also perhaps the most festive and sweet pairing there is - an apple with honey.

The combination of the beloved fruit and liquid honey is the ultimate symbol of Rosh Hashanah.

For many, dipping the apple in honey signifies the expectation of a sweet and good year, but in fact it is a successful nutritional combination, which can replace dessert or snacks, certainly during the holidays, when all meals are high in calories and heavy and we all add a few kilograms to our weight.

apples

Despite the much-loved phrase in the USA: "An apple a day will keep the doctor away from you", apples are not a "superfood" (and it's not at all certain that there is such a thing) and they won't work a private miracle for you, but they are very tasty and very healthy. Apples contain many components that contribute to health, such as vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, antioxidant components and dietary fiber. Among the many effects that apples have, it was found that they can help reduce cholesterol and reduce the risk of developing several types of cancer, including lung cancer and colon cancer.

In addition, Apples help calm the stomach because they are digested quickly, reduce diarrhea and provide available energy to the body. Apples are also a good source of pectin - a soluble fiber that can relieve diarrhea and stomachaches. Apples are rich in dietary fiber both in the core and in the skin, and a study that compared apples Bananas found apples to be more satisfying, likely due to their texture and fiber content.

honey

Although it is mostly made of sugar and has no real nutritional value, honey has been considered for many years as a home remedy to soothe sore throats and coughs, which are two common symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections.

Among the grandmother's remedies, which include, among other things, chicken soup, tea with honey and lemon is undoubtedly a familiar combination.

But this is not just a grandmother's medicine, and a scientific basis for the benefits of honey already exists.

In 2004, a study in the journal Pediatrics found that two over-the-counter cough medicines for children (dextromethorphan and diphenhydramine) were no more effective than placebo in treating children with cough, and without the side effects of the medication.

Following this in 2007, the same team of researchers compared dextromethorphan treatment, honey treatment and no treatment at all for nocturnal cough in 130 children with colds and found that honey was consistently found to be a more effective treatment.

This study joins 13 other studies with similar results.

As mentioned, honey is very sweet (about 1.5 times that of white sugar), and the absolute majority consists of simple carbohydrates.

Less than 20 percent of the weight of honey consists of water.

It also contains small and variable amounts of vitamins and protein, depending on its type.
