Pollen also often flies into autumn.

In the wet, allergy sufferers are spared.

Only mold spores could cause problems.

Autumn this year seems to be literally falling through the water.

Instead of a golden time with colorful leaves, it rained continuously in many places in Germany in September.

The dreary weather spoils the mood for some, but those who are allergic to pollen will be happy.

The high levels of precipitation and the cool weather with the first heavy snowfalls in the Alps make it difficult for the pollen count.

Under these difficult conditions, less pollen manages to get out of their flowers and travel long distances, according to the German Pollen Information Service Foundation.

Although one could have measured individual grasses, stinging nettle and gastropod pollen, these were negligible.

This is in contrast to the spores of mold fungi, which the bad weather obviously has little effect on.

According to this, the researchers at the Pollen Foundation were able to record high levels of Cladosporium spores at some West German measuring stations.

These should possibly currently cause allergic symptoms in those affected.

After all, mold spores are among the most important allergens after pollen, house dust and animal hair.

Other known types were Alternaria and Epicoccum.

However, the flight of the former is said to be slowing down again and is only sporadic, the Pollen Foundation warns.

The situation is different with the spores of Epicoccum.

Experience has shown that its pollen flight will continue for a while and large quantities of spores can even be measured in the outside air well into November.

Other molds whose spores feel particularly at home in damp conditions are the pillar fungi (Basidiomycota).

There is little empirical data on the basidiospores in this country, when they fly and in what quantity.

Nevertheless, the small spores should fly especially in late summer/early autumn and even in large concentrations in wet and cold weather.

They move through the air and eventually settle on walls and furniture like dust.

If it is damp and warm, this offers the mold an ideal nutrient medium.

The symptoms of a mold allergy are similar to those of a house dust mite allergy or hay fever.

This includes:

  • Red, itchy, watery or burning eyes

  • Sneezing and runny nose (runny nose)

  • Stuffy nose

  • Cough

Finally, non-specific symptoms such as headaches, tiredness and malaise can also occur and should be examined by a doctor.
