Thick socks, a sweater and a scarf around your neck could help in winter. However, there are also other measures to get through the cold season with as few heating costs as possible.

Thick socks, a sweater and a scarf around your neck could help in winter.

However, there are also other measures to get through the cold season with as few heating costs as possible.

Munich – Heating costs have always caused the largest share of ancillary costs in private households.

And in the coming heating season it will be even more expensive.

To save money here, people can take a few small steps that can add up to some savings over time.

Save heating costs: permanently tilted windows are useless

The tenants' association advises not to set windows to "permanent tilt".

This is where the highest heat losses would occur unnoticed.

Renters could save up to 200 euros per heating season simply by avoiding permanently tilted windows.

If windows are permanently tilted, this provides less fresh air.

They are much more likely to cause the rooms and furniture to cool down.

The tenant association tip:

Carry out a complete air exchange in the apartment in the morning.

It is best to make a draft, otherwise open the window wide in every room.

The minimum time for ventilation depends on the difference between the room temperature and the outside temperature and how strong the wind is blowing.

Even when there is no wind and there is only a slight temperature difference, 15 minutes of forced ventilation is usually sufficient.

The colder it is outside, the shorter the ventilation time.

Airing once a day is not enough

.

In the mornings and afternoons, ventilate the rooms in which people have stayed again.

Change the air completely in the evening - also in the bedroom.

Save heating costs with free radiators

Curtains, a sofa or other furniture too close to the radiator prevent the heat from spreading.

If the radiators are "free", you could save up to twelve percent in energy costs, according to the campaign "80 million together for the energy change" of the Federal Ministry of Economics and an alliance of associations.

Consumer centers recommend placing the sofa at least 30 centimeters away from the heater.

Radiator covers should generally be avoided.

Closing the doors saves heating costs

Doors between rooms should be closed.

Above all, doors to the hallway, attic, attic or basement - mostly unheated rooms - should be closed.

Everything can only be left open for brief airing with the desired draft.

However, the basic rule for sensible heating of the apartment is: Keep interior doors between differently heated rooms closed during the day and at night.

Setting the thermostat correctly reduces heating costs

It's too cold, the heating is turned up to the maximum.

After all, the room should warm up quickly.

Then it's suddenly too warm.

Turn down the heating and open the windows.

It quickly gets cold again and the game starts all over again.

If you try to keep your rooms at a constant temperature, you can save a lot.

To do this, set the thermostat once and leave it that way, recommends the

Federal Environment Agency

.

The ideal to maximum temperatures for the living areas are 20 °C to 22 °C.

In the kitchen, 18 °C to 20 °C is sufficient.

And in the bedroom 16 °C to 18 °C.

If you want your bathroom to be cozy and warm, you should go up to a maximum of 23 °C.

Lowering the room temperature by just one degree saves up to six percent of the heating energy.

Tenants can still do this to save on heating costs:

  • close the roller shutter.

This can reduce heat loss through the window by around 20% at night.

    Closed curtains enhance this effect.

  • Install a layer of insulating foil behind the radiator to prevent heat from escaping through the outside wall.

  • Only use electric fan heaters and radiators in an emergency (if another heating system fails) and only for a short time.

Continuous operation of these devices is a waste of energy and money.

  • To prevent mold from forming, move your furniture away from outside walls.

  • Do not heat from one room to another.

    The "rollover" of the unheated room only leads moist air into the other room;

    this deposits its moisture there.

Those who heed these tips can save money and do not have to turn on the heating later or at all in their own four walls, according to the tenants' association.
