Recall of squid: Cadmium puts a strain on the kidneys and triggers diseases
Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal.
If it enters the food chain, for example via the squid arms, the body absorbs it.
There it can be detected in the organs, especially in the kidneys.
The heavy metal is only broken down again very slowly by the body, which means that it is enriched with cadmium.
The heavy metal has a toxic effect on the affected organs.
A sign of cadmium poisoning is often renal dysfunction, reports the
Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety.

If the exposure to cadmium is increased over a longer period of time, it can even lead to kidney failure, the office further reports.
In addition, the bones are stressed because demineralization occurs.
This in turn can lead to osteoporosis.

This can also increase the risk of numerous diseases, such as cardiovascular problems.
