Grandi will remain at the helm of UNHCR for another two and a half years from 1 July 2023 to 31 December 2025. Guterres wanted to ask the General Assembly to elect Grandi for a second five-year term, but the High Commissioner preferred to give his consent. , for personal reasons, at the shortest time.
Prior to being the head of UNHCR, Grandi was engaged in international cooperation for over 30 years, focusing on refugees and humanitarian work.
He served as Commissioner General of the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees, Unrwa, from 2010 to 2014, and before that he was Deputy Commissioner General of the organization since 2005. Prior to that, he served as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Afghanistan.
