NEW YORK - An Italian Impressionist in Paris: the Phillips Collection presents in Washington the first exhibition in the United States dedicated to Giuseppe De Nittis in an example of international collaboration with the Giuseppe De Nittis Picture Gallery, the Municipality of Barletta, the Puglia Region and the Foundation Pino Pascali.
The exhibition, open from 12 November to 12 February, will bring together 73 works preserved in important collections and museums in the United States, France and Italy, 32 of which come from the Pinacoteca De Nittis.
"Giuseppe De Nittis was an important figure of Impressionism but in the USA he was not praised like a Degas or a Manet", said Dorothy Kosinski, the director of Phillips, according to whom the exhibition will focus the spotlight on his influential role on the art of time,
especially in Paris where De Nittis arrived from Naples in 1867 when he was only 21 years old.
The young artist soon became known and in 1874 Degas invited him - the only Italian - to participate in the first exhibition on the Impressionists at 35 Boulevard des Capucines, in the former studio of the photographer Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, better known as Nadar.
Based in Barletta in the historic Palazzo Marra, the Pinacoteca De Nittis was born with the bequest of Léontine Gruvelle De Nittis, the artist's widow, of about 200 paintings and drawings of her husband.
The exhibition also presents the results of the close friendship with Manet Degas, who was the mentor of the young man from Puglia, and the first collaborations in Naples in 1872 and 1875 with the young Gustave Caillebotte.
