At least two people are missing and three others were injured in Guatemala on Saturday, September 24, after two giant sinkholes formed in a street in Villa Nueva, located south of the capital of the Central American country.
The three injured people fell into a 15m sinkhole while in their vehicle and were rescued a few hours later by emergency services.
“The cranes pulled out a vehicle inside the sinkhole,” said Juan Aquino, spokesperson for road safety.

The President of the Republic, Alejandro Giammattei, expressed his support for the victims in a tweet: “I regret what happened in Villa Nueva and I deeply sympathize with those affected.
We will help the Municipality of Villa Nueva to repair the damage as soon as possible”.
The collapse of the road was reportedly caused by heavy rains.
According to the National Coordination for Disaster Prevention, at least 44 people died as a result of the rainy season in 2022 in Guatemala.
