The federal government wants to support BAföG recipients and trainees with a new flat-rate heating fee of 345 euros.
The subsidy approved by the cabinet on Wednesday was originally only intended for housing benefit recipients, but the government had agreed "that the second heating cost subsidy should also benefit BAföG recipients and trainees," said Federal Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger (FDP) to the Funke newspapers media group on Wednesday.
"The rising energy prices are also a major burden for young people in training," said Stark-Watzinger.
BAföG recipients and trainees are already being supported with an initial heating subsidy of 230 euros and with the planned one-off payment of 200 euros for all students and technical students.
Now they should also benefit from the second heating cost subsidy.
According to SPIEGEL information, the 200 euros for all students will not be paid out until 2023.
It is also unclear how the money will reach the students.
