(ANSA) - BRUSSELS - The EU bans imports of food with residues of two pesticides harmful to bees.

It is the first time that the EU, and that a member of the WTO in general, has imposed restrictions on the import of food on the basis of an environmental issue and not for consumer health reasons.

The outdoor use of the two insecticides, belonging to the neonicotinoid class, has been banned in the EU since 2018. "Given their negative impact on pollinators worldwide, including bees, the use of these two neonicotinoids is already been banned in the EU - explained the competent Commissioner Stella Kyriakides - today we are taking a further step forward, contributing to the transition towards sustainable food systems also at a global level ".

According to the regulation proposed by the European Commission and approved today by the Member States, maximum residue limits will apply to these substances at the lowest measurable level, not only on food products made in the EU but also on imported ones.

The Commission had notified the measure to the WTO in recent months.

Ten major trading partners, from Japan to the US, from Brazil to South Africa, have publicly rejected the initiative.

The regulation will be submitted to the Council and Parliament, which have two months to react.

If the two institutions do not object, it will be adopted at the beginning of 2023. (ANSA).
