From October 2022, millions of Germans will have to have their gas heating checked.

Here you can find out who is affected and how the heating check works.

Gas is becoming scarce in Germany.

Because many gas heaters also do not work particularly efficiently, the federal government has introduced a mandatory heating check in its energy saving ordinance.

From October 1, 2022, all gas heating systems in Germany are to be tested.

Read below to find out who is affected and what that means.

Heating check becomes mandatory: Why is a check necessary?

Many gas heaters in Germany are not properly adjusted or are only irregularly maintained.

As a result, you use up a lot of energy unnecessarily.

The heating check should now ensure that the gas heating works optimally and works efficiently.

Who must have the heating check carried out?

All house and apartment owners who have a natural gas-powered heating system must have the obligatory heating check carried out in accordance with the Energy Saving Ordinance.

They have two years from October 1, 2022 to do this.

Specialists must be hired for the test.

Tenants do not have to do anything about it.

Anyone who has recently had an inspection, a pump exchange, etc. carried out should speak to their tradesman in advance.

Because: "If a comparable test was not more than two years ago, a new check is not necessary," writes the

Deutsche Handwerkszeitung

.

Who carries out the heating test?

Homeowners have several options for carrying out the heating check.

For example, you can hire a heating engineer, a chimney sweep or an energy consultant.

The important thing is that the heating system is checked by a specialist company.

In order to reduce effort and travel costs, the chimney sweep association recommends having the heating checked as part of other work in the house, such as regular heating maintenance.

Also pay attention to any existing maintenance contracts for your heating system so as not to lose any warranty claims.

What is checked during the heating check?

According to the “Ordinance on securing the energy supply through medium-term effective measures”, the following points should be checked:

  • Are the technical settings of the heating optimized in terms of energy efficiency?

  • Does the heating have to be hydraulically balanced?

  • Are efficient heating pumps used in the heating system?

  • Do insulation measures have to be carried out on pipes and fittings?

  • You can read the wording of the ordinance under the awkward name Medium-Term Energy Supply Securing Measures Ordinance (EnSimiMaV) on the Bundestag website.

How much does the heating check cost?

It is not possible to say in general which costs the heating inspection will incur for the owner.

The costs depend, among other things, on the provider, the duration and the scope of the work.

A simple heating check (expenditure: 1 hour) usually costs between 100 and 150 euros.

Further optimization work, such as insulation, is then added.

Do you want to save money on heating?

Then it is best to check the temperatures in your living space.

On the other hand, you should stay away from lowering the hot water temperature to save gas.
