US rapper Coolio is dead. He died in Los Angeles at the age of 59, according to his longtime manager Jarez Posey.

His manager, Susan Heber, also reported the news.

Coolio was found dead at a friend's house.

He went to the bathroom and didn't come out again after a long time.

Information on the cause of death is not yet available.

Coolio's real name was Artis Leon Ivey Jr. He was born in Monessen, Pennsylvania - and became a star in the mid-1990s: in 1994 he released his debut solo album "It Takes a Thief", whose single "Fantastic Voyage" was extremely successful.

A year later, Coolio's second album was released, along with the single of the same name »Gangsta's Paradise«, which was the soundtrack to the high school drama »Dangerous Minds« with Michelle Pfeiffer.

Coolio conquered the charts and was awarded a Grammy for the song.

He was nominated for five other Grammys during his career.

Coolio was able to continue the success with the melodic baroque sample »I'll CU When You Get There«.

After that, however, it became quiet around him.

In 2004, the rapper tried to get back into the limelight on the ProSieben show »Comeback – The Great Chance«.

However, he ended up third behind former Smokie singer Chris Norman and ex-Caught in the Act member Benjamin Boyce.

Six years later, Coolio spent a few days in the "Big Brother" house - from which he was kicked out early for insulting a fellow transgender candidate.

Nevertheless, in 2012 he was allowed back on television in the cooking show »Celebrity Cook-Off«.

Coolio was later seen as a candidate in the American version of »Wife Swap«.

The rapper had repeatedly run into trouble with the law for illegal possession of drugs and weapons.

He was also on trial in Germany in 1998: At that time he was sentenced to six months' probation and a fine for being an accessory to robbery and bodily harm.

Numerous colleagues reacted to the news of the rapper's death.

"This is sad news," wrote rapper Ice Cube on Twitter.

"I saw first hand how this man made it to the top of the industry." Drummer and rap musician Questlove wished on Instagram: "Peaceful journey, brother."

Actress Pfeiffer also said goodbye to Coolio via Instagram and wrote of a "far too short life".

She remembered that he was nothing but kind.

Even today, 30 years later, she gets goosebumps when she hears the soundtrack to »Dangerous Minds«.
