Flight into one of the strongest storms in Florida history: The crew of a Storm Chaser machine steers through Hurricane "Ian" - and is properly shaken up.

Nick Underwood, hurricane hunter:

"Holy sh*****."

The crew is collecting data for the weather agency.

"Ian" has become the fourth strongest hurricane to ever hit the Florida coast.

The dimensions are clearly visible from the ISS.

People in the "Sunshine State" experienced strong winds, rain, storm surges and power outages on Wednesday.

With wind speeds of 240 kilometers per hour, Ian hit the US coast.

The storm was just below the threshold for the highest hurricane category 5.

The authorities tried in advance to attune Florida's population to the dangers.

Ron DeSantis, Governor of Florida:

“The storm is massive and comparable to Hurricane Charlie, which took a similar route in 2004.

Charlie was supposed to hit Tampa Bay like this storm, but veered and eventually hit Southwest Florida.

Charlie was strong, but he was only a fraction of what we're seeing here in Hurricane Ian.

The consequences will be significant.«

Storm surges as a result of heavy rain reached a height of around 3.5 meters in some cases.

More than two million households were temporarily without power during the night.

Evacuation instructions applied to around 2.5 million people in the region.

The authorities expected serious damage to infrastructure and communication lines.

US President Biden pledged support to Florida.

Joe Biden, US President:

“Follow all warnings and instructions from emergency authorities.

Don't take anything for granted.

Rely on their judgment, not yours.

Evacuate when ordered.

Be prepared.

Storm warnings are real.

The evacuation order is real.

The danger is real.

When the storm clears, the US government will be there to help you rebuild.”

The storm initially weakened as it made its way into inland Florida.

On Thursday night, however, he reached wind speeds of up to 150 kilometers per hour.

All Florida residents were warned not to leave their homes on Thursday morning, for example to assess damage.

Even if the hurricane pulls away, there is still danger.

So far there have been no reports of deaths.

"Ian" is expected to move on north.

Therefore, the US states of Georgia and South Carolina must now arm themselves for the storm.
