The immunologist recalled the importance of wearing a mask on public transport as a rise in cases continues in recent years

The 8th wave of Covid-19 is already here.

Asked about Franceinfo this Friday, the president of the Committee for monitoring and anticipating health risks, Brigitte Autran, mentioned the rise in cases in France in recent weeks and the actions to be taken to limit the transmission of the virus.

“This new wave does not worry us, however, indicated the immunologist.

But the 8th wave is very real.

We must start wearing masks again in public transport, and in all populated places, ”she said.

“We must model ourselves on the Asian populations who have been wearing masks for a very long time as soon as they have a cold or as soon as they have someone in their family who has a cold.

I believe that this must become a civic gesture, ”continued the specialist.

All Covid indicators are up.

In detail, 51,366 positive cases were identified in 24 hours, up 34% compared to last Thursday (38,464 cases).

In hospital, critical care admissions jumped 31% in one week and 54% for daily hospitalizations.

Under these conditions, should we be worried about the arrival of a new variant?

“There is no specter of a variant villain coming on the horizon.

It is extremely monitored all over the world”, reassured Brigitte Audran, while acknowledging that hospitalizations in France are rising “even with the current variant”.

Vaccines to "better limit infection and transmission"

Incidentally, the immunologist recalled the importance of vaccination to “protect against serious forms” of the virus.

She also mentioned the interest of the three new vaccines which target the original strain of the virus, but also the Omicron variant.

These new serums - which will be administered in October for Moderna and Pfizer / BioNTech and in November for the last Pfizer - will make it possible to "better limit infection and transmission", underlined the specialist.

As a reminder, the next two vaccines have been developed by Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech and still target the original strain of the virus but also the BA.1 variant of Omicron.

The third vaccine, developed by Pfizer and available in November, will attack the original virus and the latest Omicron sub-lineage, BA.5, which remains the dominant variant in current infections.
