Ten thousand migrants rescued this year in the central Mediterranean and transported to Italy by NGO ships.

In 2021 there were 6 thousand.

The increase - which has intensified in recent weeks - reflects that of total arrivals by sea: they are 71 thousand since January 1, compared to 46 thousand in the first 9 months of last year (+ 65%) and have already exceeded 67 thousand in entire 2021. The humanitarian fleet, for its part, is strengthening: there are at least 7 ships in operation and soon there will also be the Sea Watch 5, which will be able to accommodate up to 500 people.

The issue of NGO ships - as part of the overall management of the immigration dossier - will be on the table of the next tenant of the Interior Ministry expressed by the center-right, who has promised a squeeze.

Of the 71,000 migrants who landed in Italy this year,

half (about 35 thousand) were rescued at sea (in addition to NGO ships, Coast Guard and Finance Police vehicles, as well as civilian merchant ships, intervened).

The other half traveled on boats that arrived independently, without SAR (search and rescue) events.

Among the nationalities of the landed, the Tunisians (14,577) stand out, followed by Egyptians (14,134) and Bengalis (10,711).

There are 7,769 unaccompanied minors.
