Hydrangeas are usually planted in spring.

With two exceptions: shrub and panicle hydrangeas also grow well in autumn.

Enthusiastic hobby gardeners are usually reluctant to be held back by the seasons when they want to change the design of their green oasis.

With hydrangeas, however, one should pay attention to the variety before planting new plants with root balls in the ground, as this damages the shoots and thus growth, and the flowers can fail in the next season.

Farmer's and plate hydrangeas are quite sensitive, the best time to plant them is after the ice saints in spring.

Planting until late summer is also possible if the hydrangeas are well watered, because the roots then have enough time to grow before winter.

If you have new hydrangeas in mind for the garden planning in autumn, you should choose the shrub or snowball hydrangea as well as panicle hydrangeas.

Because these varieties are very hardy plants.

According to

Mein Schönen Garten

, they are cut back heavily in spring anyway and only then form buds.

Until then, the dried plants are an enrichment for garden animals such as birds and insects.

The best

way to plant hydrangeas in autumn is as follows, as recommended by

Hortensie.de :

  • Cut off excess white roots growing out of the pot of the freshly purchased plant, or avoid buying them altogether.

Soak the pot in water for about ten minutes so that the root ball can soak.

  • In a partially shaded spot with deep, humus rich soil, dig a hole about twice the size of the pot but just as deep.

As you do this, fluff up the edges and bottom of the hole.

In nutrient-poor soils, you can incorporate leaf humus or compost as required.

  • Take the plant out of the pot and place it in the planting hole.

Fill loosely with soil, press down and water the plant well again.

A location that is not in a dip in the garden and loosening the soil when planting the soil are very important.

Otherwise waterlogging can form, which the hydrangeas cannot tolerate.

After planting, you can also cover the soil around the root ball with a layer of leaves or bark mulch.
