Chancellor Scholz announced a new aid package yesterday.
Up to 200 billion euros are to be made available – for the energy supply.
At the same time, the much-criticised gas levy will no longer apply.
Energy prices are rising, companies and citizens are increasingly suffering from the high costs.
Actually, the gas levy was supposed to come from October 1st – it was supposed to support gas importers who had to buy expensive gas elsewhere due to the lack of gas deliveries from Russia.
Citizens should pay – that was criticized.
It is now clear that the gas levy was withdrawn by ordinance.
Instead, the federal government is to provide up to 200 billion euros for the energy supply.
The gas surcharge was withdrawn by ordinance.

Gas price cap instead of gas levy: Scholz calls it the "double boom"
If citizens have already paid the gas levy, it must be repaid, according to a report by the
German Press Agency (dpa)
.
Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) says that the billion-euro package should preserve the future viability of the German economy.
The
dpa
quotes Habeck as follows: "It's not just about getting through this crisis somehow, but about surviving this time as a strong and robust economy."
What can the gas price cap mean for consumers?
The following is currently known:
VAT reduction on gas remains: 7 percent instead of 19 percent in the period from October 1, 2022 to March 31, 2024.
The VAT reduction will be transferred to district heating contracts.
The online comparison
portal Check24
has calculated possible changes for consumers.
According to this, the reduction in VAT alone should result in the following savings: families would be relieved by 306 euros, singles by 87 euros.
At the same time,
Check24
presents the following sample table.
This shows the possible relief through a reduction in VAT and the gas surcharge.
The results have been rounded and are based on the average gas price in September 2022.

Who will feel anything about the gas price brake and when?
It is not yet clear who will be relieved of the up to 200 billion euros provided by the federal government.
A commission is to deal with it, which will prepare proposals for this by mid-October.
Criticism of the abolition of the gas price brake
The
dpa
reports that leading economic institutes have warned against introducing a gas price brake.
Experts fear that this could fuel inflation as consumers could start spending more again.
In addition, there is no incentive to save gas.
