Eni, supplies of Russian gas to Italy will be 'zero' from today

Eni announces it on its website.

"Gazprom has communicated that it is unable to confirm the volumes of gas required for today, given that it is not possible to supply gas through Austria".

Eni will give updates if supplies are re-established.

"As of today Gazprom is no longer delivering gas to Eni since, according to its communications, it would not be able to fulfill the obligations necessary to obtain the gas dispatching service in Austria where it should deliver it".

This was declared by an Eni spokesperson interviewed by ANSA on the stop of Russian gas.

"However, we understand that Austria is continuing to receive gas at the delivery point at the Slovakia / Austria border. We are working to verify with Gazprom whether it is possible to reactivate the flows to Italy",

The supply of Russian gas compared to the total available to Italy was now less than 10%.

The suspension of supplies from Tarvisio therefore does not change the situation significantly at the moment.

The plan carried out by Eni for the enhancement and diversification of gas supplies to Italy will make it possible to progressively replace the more than 20 billion cubic meters per year of volumes of gas imported from Moscow by the group up to last year.

As for gas via pipeline, additional supplies are already arriving from Algeria, from where Italy is receiving daily peaks in volumes of over 80 million cubic meters.

From the North African country, an additional 6 billion cubic meters will progressively arrive between now and next year,

which will reach 9 billion between 2023 and 2024, doubling Eni's imports from Algeria from 9 to 18 billion cubic meters per year when fully operational in 2024. This winter Italy will then be able to count on about 4 billion additional cubic meters from Northern Europe and the first additional LNG supplies in particular from Egypt.

Furthermore, from next spring, all the additional liquefied natural gas from countries such as Egypt, Qatar, Congo, Angola and Nigeria will begin to arrive in an important way, for a total of 4 billion in 2023 and 7 billion in 2024. A figure destined to rise further.

In essence, approximately 10 billion additional cubic meters will already be available this winter (over 50% of Russian gas in Eni's portfolio), an additional 17 billion cubic meters will be exceeded between 2023 and 2024 (approximately 80%), 

VON DER LEYEN: 'SERIOUS ENERGY CRISIS, COMMON EU RESPONSE NEEDED' 

Speaking at the ceremony for the Bulgaria-Greece interconnector,

Ursula von der Leyen explains that "the energy crisis is serious. And it requires a common response from Europe that will allow to reduce energy costs for families and businesses".

"We have already taken important steps. For example, yesterday we agreed together to limit the exceptional profits made by some energy companies. More needs to be done." 

"Europe has everything it needs to free itself from our dependence on Russia. It is a question of political will," said von der Leyen.

"Without a common European response, we seriously risk fragmentation".

"As in the past, we must maintain a level playing field and avoid distortions of the single market. So the task ahead is clear. We must do more to contain the soaring energy prices that are weakening our economy."

"Let us stand together and together form our strong and resilient Energy Union," said the President of the European Commission speaking at the inauguration of the interconnector between Greece and Bulgaria.
