North Port, Florida, after Hurricane Ian.

Hundreds of people are stuck in their homes in the partly flooded city.

Only those who own a boat have the chance to leave their property.

Everyone else depends on people like Andrew Etheridge.

The volunteer helper tries on his own to evacuate people from the flooded area.

Andrew Etheridge, Volunteer:

“This is the seventh family we've taken from their homes since last night.

It's harder than we thought."

From the air it becomes clear why the salvage is difficult - the water is meters high.

The authorities in Florida are so far aware of 23 deaths as a result of the storm.

It is said that many of the victims drowned.

Around 10,000 people are still missing.

Most of them are probably in shelters - or without power and unable to draw attention to themselves.

In many places, residents are standing in the rubble of their houses and shops.

Tammy Clementine, resident:

"It was awful.

Everything in the house just fell over: the refrigerator, the televisions, everything brand new.

A brand new living room set, just bought.

All of that wasn't insured.

I have insurance for my car.

But the house was too old, they didn't want to insure it."

The damage in Florida has so far been estimated at 25 to 45 billion dollars.

But the number is likely to increase.

O-Tones:

We're in the clubhouse if you want to come too.

I don't know what I'm doing yet.

I'm looking for a pair of shoes first.

We lost everything.

Yes, me too.

Everything but our lives.

Long queues formed in front of the supermarkets on Friday.

People try to get what they need.

Leonardo Cardi, residents:

“I came here yesterday and was told they would open at 8am.

So I made sure I was in line by 7am at the latest.

I've got everything now, it's just after 9 o'clock."

Anyone who has nothing left and is able to leave the disaster area.

A more than 15-kilometer traffic jam formed on an interstate highway that leads north from the most severely affected area.

The first petrol stations are running out of petrol.

Joe Biden reiterated his promise to the people of Florida that the US government would support them.

Joe Biden, US President:

“We are only just beginning to appreciate the extent of this destruction.

It will likely be among the worst in the country's history.

The federal government is covering all of the costs of clearing up the massive piles of debris left behind in the districts by the hurricane.

Everything has to be cleared away so the people in the communities can start the hard work of rebuilding.«

After Hurricane Ian hit Florida's Gulf Coast on Wednesday, it moved on to Georgia and South Carolina.

It also caused flooding here.

Although the storm has weakened, the national weather service continued to warn of heavy rain, flash floods and strong winds.
