The news of the Queen's death caused dismay for many people - even if most of them did not know Elizabeth II personally.
This dismay is also reflected in the number of expressions of grief received by the British royal family: Buckingham Palace says it has received more than 50,000 letters of condolence.
On the day after the state funeral alone, 6,500 letters were received.
Even before the Queen's death, around 1,000 letters with questions or good wishes reached the palace every week.
Every letter and every card is carefully read and answered by the small correspondence team, it said in a statement.
Images show large stacks of mail - some personally addressed to the Queen's son, King Charles III, for example, while others reveal children's handwriting.
Elizabeth II died on September 8 at the age of 96 at her country estate in Balmoral, Scotland.
She was buried on September 19 in a historic state funeral in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
