(ANSA) - BANGKOK, 02 OCT - At least 174 people died following a series of clashes at the end of a football match in Indonesia.

The clashes would have occurred when fans invaded the playing field at the end of a match in Malang, in the province of East Java.

Many people are trampled to death in the crush of the field invasion that has turned into tragedy.

Madness exploded at the end of the match when thousands of Arema Fc fans entered the pitch at the Kanjuruhan stadium.

They were infuriated by the 3-2 defeat they suffered against their long-time rivals Persebaya Surabaya, a team with which they had not lost for more than twenty years.

At that point the police officers intervened and tried to calm the minds, without succeeding.

At the launch of the tear gas, chaos broke out,

followed by panic and general flight.

According to a hospital source, there is also a five-year-old child among the victims.

Pictures from inside the stadium show the police throwing a large number of tear gas and the fans climbing over the fences to escape to safety.

The Indonesian government apologized for the incident and promised to investigate the matter.
