Rebecca Marder: “Rereading my interviews, I often have the impression that it is someone other than me”

2022-10-02T03:44:19.401Z

In Simone, the journey of the century, by Olivier Dahan, she is Simone Veil from the age of 16, when she was deported, until she was 37. With this role and three more to come, she seems to have become the new face of French cinema.

Miss Figaro.

- Is talking about me on promo a chore?

Corvée is not the word, but it is indeed a work and a sometimes arduous task.

It is to be led to speak of oneself by speaking only of a part of oneself.

When re-reading my interviews, I often have the impression that it's someone other than me, Rebecca, the actress.

But it is also a chance to be given the floor.

The question I'm dreading or the one I'm not answering?

"On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate me as an interviewer?"

My news?

The forthcoming release of

Simone, the journey of the century,

by Olivier Dahan, then, in a few months, I will present the films of Sylvain Desclous, Noémie Lvovsky and François Ozon.

My character ?

I play Simone Veil over twenty years.

From the horror of the camps on his return to France.

But also her studies, her marriage, the birth of her children, the magistrature... It's really a chance to be able to embody the extraordinary destiny of an extraordinary woman, and to cross the ages and the times.

My qualities or my faults shared with the character?

It's hard to compare yourself to Simone Veil… I would say that she is a model, an infinite source of inspiration, and that I hope to share with her integrity, life force and faith in humanity.

Any misunderstanding about me?

There's a British actress named Rebecca Mader, without the 'r', and sometimes I've been asked to sign an autograph on a photo of a red-haired woman twenty years older than me...

My attitude on set?

I was rather very focused, and I wanted to live up to the character.

But that didn't stop me from laughing with the film crew, dancing, singing, releasing the pressure or the emotions when they were so strong that I could have been overwhelmed.

My shooting secret?

There's a sequence shot that was actually shot in three different locations, a month and a half apart.

It's a long scene where the character comes out of the Opera in the middle of a panic attack, then gets into a car to go home.

And since the Opera was located in Hungary, the car in the studio, and the house in France, in the countryside, it was a question of fitting!

We only see fire in the film.

At a time when the right to abortion is violated in the United States and threatened everywhere else, the film could not resonate better

Rebecca Marder

How does this work have a particular resonance for me?

At a time when the right to abortion is flouted in the United States and threatened everywhere else, when a war broke out in Europe on February 24, the film could not resonate better.

The review that made me happy?

It was a criticism that did me a favor: when I started at the Comédie-Française, Dominique Blanc told me that I behaved like the hunchback of Notre-Dame, that I had to assume myself, and that I stop playing with my back to the public.

My current state of mind?

I'm happy, impatient, and also a little intimidated to be able to share the film with the public, to talk with them about the character and the resonances it may have.

My current mental load?

The future, which is perplexing.

What am I going to do after this interview?

Going to the cinema to see

Leila and her brothers,

by Saeed Roustaee, then going home to cook for friends who are coming over for dinner.

Simone, the journey of the century,

by Olivier Dahan, with Rebecca Marder, Elsa Zylberstein, Élodie Bouchez… Released on October 12.
