Not everyone has a cool basement to stock up on apples.

But with a few tricks, a dark room or a balcony will suffice.

They become wrinkled, floury and lose vitamins - if you keep apples in the wrong conditions, you won't enjoy them for very long.

But what to do with large quantities?

Anyone who collects apples from meadow orchards or receives a crate as a gift from a garden owner can store them for a long time without a cool cellar.

All you need is a blanket or a plastic bag.

If you don't have a basement, you can store apples in a cool pantry or in the refrigerator, explains the

North Rhine-Westphalia consumer advice center

.

A temperature of four to seven degrees Celsius is ideal.

But this possibility is not always given.

If you do not want to process the apples into compote or apple juice, you have two simple alternatives for storage:

Actually, one tries to avoid the use of plastic, but in the case of apple storage, a bag made of polyethylene (PET) can be helpful.

According to the Federal Center for Nutrition, if you poke small air holes in such a foil bag, put the apples in it and close the bag, a low-oxygen mini-climate forms inside that slows down the ripening and aging processes.

Because the apples emit carbon dioxide, which thanks to the bag means that the fruit is prevented from drying out and the necessary humidity is maintained.

It is best to store these bagged apples in a dry place in a cool, dark room.

The following apple varieties are particularly suitable for storage:

  • ontario

  • boskoop

  • topaz

  • bell apple

  • Berlepsch

  • Cox Orange

  • Elstar

If you don't want to use plastic, you can use the second storage method, for which you only need a box and a blanket, according to the YouTube channel

: you simply put the apples in an airy wooden box and turn it on shady, dry place on the balcony, terrace or in the garage.

As soon as the first frost threatens, you cover the box with the blanket.
