The engineers of the Army of the Castel Maggiore regiment defused the three military devices, found during the works for the construction of the road network in the Municipality of Casalecchio di Reno (Bologna), an operation for which an evacuation of five thousand people had been ordered .
The ordnance, three aircraft bombs, weighing about 500 pounds (equal to 243 kg), 250 pounds (equal to 124 kg) and 100 pounds (equal to 52 kg), all of American manufacture, had been found in very bad conservation conditions but still active.
The operations, coordinated by the Prefecture of Bologna and the Northern Operational Forces Command of Padua, were carried out in three phases: during the first phase, a temporary protective structure was built around each bomb to mitigate the effects. due to an accidental explosion;
then the bombs were neutralized by removing the ignition systems;
in the third phase, finally, in the next few days, they will be made to shine.
During the operations, the Bologna-Porretta Terme railway line and a section of the A1 motorway were closed to traffic, as well as some municipal roads adjacent to the area where the bomb was found.
