"Blonde" is nothing more than a provocative endurance test Israel today

2022-10-03T12:38:16.600Z

The Netflix movie about the life of Marilyn Monroe is full of horrifying and hard-to-watch scenes that show us how terrible her life was • Left out: the virtues, achievements and skills of the iconic star • Feel free not to watch it

"Blonde", the imaginary biopic about the tragic life of Marilyn Monroe that appeared on Netflix this weekend, is an artistic, sadistic and merciless film that abuses its subject (and the viewers) without an iota of mercy.

Based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates, which was published in 1999, the Australian director Andrew Dominic weaves here an impressionistic, extreme and very long nightmare, which, like his previous films ("The Assassination of Jesse James", "Killing Them Softly") does succeed Be very visually and technically impressive.

However, you will not find sophistication and restraint here.

Not even a bit.

Not comfort either.

Just a collection of more horrifying and less horrifying scenes where Monroe is portrayed as a helpless victim of circumstance.

Ana de Armas ("Well Written Murder", "No Time to Die"), who stars in the title role, is not the problem of this film.

She fully commits to Dominique's vision, and there are many moments here where she merges with the iconic actress she fully portrays.

But "Blonde" is not at all interested in Monroe's virtues, skills and achievements.

His only concern is to illustrate to us how terrible and full of suffering her life was, and he does it in the most intrusive and unpleasant way possible: starting with her difficult childhood with an alcoholic and mentally disturbed mother (who tries to drown her daughter in the bathtub), continuing with her early days in Hollywood (in the company of repulsive producers who rape her ), go through her heyday (in which Monroe is portrayed as a pale sheep surrounded by animals of prey), to her last days (which include a repulsive and blatant scene in which Monroe meets US President John F. Kennedy).

Dominique's not-so-complex point does become clear early in the film, but that doesn't stop him from delivering it over and over and over again.

As a result, despite the amazing cinematography, and despite the transformative totality of De Armes, the power of "Blonde" is getting weaker and weaker, until nothing is left of it but hollow papers.

On the one hand, the cinema needs pretentious, challenging and divisive films, where the creator gets complete freedom.

On the other hand, in this case the result is mainly a provocative and punishing endurance test, which is not rewarding in any way.

Don't feel obligated to pass it.
