Metro in Tel Aviv.

A distant dream? (Photo: official website, -)

While the opening of the first line of the light rail, which has been running for almost two decades, continues to be delayed - the government today approved the first metro line (M1).

This means that as long as the next government does not take the initiative and shorten the procedures - the expectation for the first train to depart is between 20 and 30 years.

The Ministerial Committee for Interior Affairs, Services, Planning and Local Government, chaired by the Minister of the Interior, Ayelet Shaked, approved this morning the plan for the construction of the northern part of the M1 line.

This is the central section of the metro which will be the base and link with the other metro lines.

The length of the approved section is about 14 km and it includes 11 underground stations. The section starts near Gilil and continues south through Ramat Aviv, Haim Lebanon Street, Namir Street, Yigal Alon Street and up to the Holon intersection.

The line passes through the center of the metropolis, and is expected to serve a central Employment, as well as educational and cultural centers, including Tel Aviv University, the Land of Israel Museum and the Kibbutzim Seminary.

A solution to road congestion?

The metro line system will connect the entire Tel Aviv metropolis, starting from Lod, Ramla and Rehovot in the south to Ra'anana, Kfar Saba in the north and Petah Tikva in the east.

The metro lines will be an additional and main answer to the relief of congestion on the roads, increasing the investment in public transportation and shortening the travel distances to the employment centers in the metropolis.

This section complements the recently approved southern section of the M1 metro line.

The approval of the section will allow the promotion of the construction of the first phase of the metro project from the Green Village Interchange to Rishonim Interchange.

The central section of the M1 metro line from the Holon intersection to the Gilolit intersection is a significant and important section that includes 11 stations in the most important metropolitan and transportation hubs in the network, including the Gilolit South, Savidor, HaShalom and Hagana transportation centers that will ease the traffic jams. We continue In the making even in this period".

Chairman of the National Planning Headquarters, Attorney Shlomi Heisler

: "The metro project is critical to the growing Tel Aviv metropolis. The metro combined with additional mass transit systems including the light rail will provide a proper transportation solution for the residents. I thank the planning administration for the professional and hard work, and in the coming months We will work to approve additional segments."
