Several big names in technology, from Amazon to Apple, from Google to Meta and Microsoft, are engaged in a project for accessibility.

It is called 'Speech Accessibility' and is in collaboration with the University of Illinois (Uiuc): the goal is to improve speech recognition for people with diseases that affect speech such as Lou Gehrig, Parkinson's, cerebral palsy, the syndrome Down's, just to name a few, which are currently not considered by artificial intelligence algorithms.

"Voice interfaces should be available to everyone, including people with disabilities - says Uiuc professor Mark Hasegawa-Johnson - it was a difficult task because it requires a lot of infrastructure, ideally those that can be supported by major technology companies, so we have created a unique interdisciplinary team with expertise in linguistics, speech, artificial intelligence, security and privacy. "

The Speech Accessibility project will collect speech samples from individuals representing a variety of linguistic models.

The University will recruit paid volunteers to help create a "private, unidentified" dataset that can be used to train machine learning models.

The group will initially focus on American English.

It is not the first initiative of technology companies in the field of inclusion with dedicated apps, automatic subtitles, the use of artificial intelligence to create photo descriptions and even products designed for people with disabilities.
