When the first leaves fall from the trees, the garden is far from over.

We show which garden work is due in October.

In October it can get really warm again during the day, while the first frost slowly announces itself at night.

The final planting and trimming work is now pending in the garden.

But the lawn still needs some maintenance.

Gardening in October: This is what to do now

The following garden work awaits you in October:

  • plant insensitive shrubs

  • move plants

  • perennial care

  • cut shrubs

  • Take precautions against frost

  • Clear the lawn of leaves and fertilize

Autumn planting of hardy trees

All insensitive trees and shrubs can be planted wonderfully in October.

These include fruit trees (such as apple, pear, plum), bare-root roses and all wild trees.

Autumn planting has the advantage that the plants have already formed roots in the spring.

This makes them more robust and more developed than their peers, which are not planted until spring.

Dry times then bother them less.

Frost-sensitive plants such as hibiscus or butterfly bushes, on the other hand, should only be planted in spring.

move plants

Between October and March you can move unfavorably placed trees and shrubs.

Prerequisite: They have not been in place for more than 5 years and the weather is frost-free.

Perennial care in autumn

The perennial year is slowly coming to an end in October.

Therefore, pay attention to the perennial bed again by plucking weeds and removing withered flowers and leaves.

The soil can now be loosened up again and covered with a thin layer of mulch.

Prune shrubs in October

Before winter sets in, some trees and shrubs can still tolerate pruning in October.

According to a report by

NDR

, these include :

  • Hedges, such as conifers

  • roses

  • ornamental

    perennials

From October 1st, hedges may be pruned more or even completely cleared and replaced with new ones.

From March to September, only light trimming and grooming is allowed so as not to disturb nesting birds and other creatures.

This is provided for in the Federal Nature Conservation Act.

Anyone who violates this must expect hefty fines of up to 100,000 euros.

Precautions against frost

October nights can already be freezing cold.

To protect frost-sensitive plants, there are a few precautions to take.

Gardening expert

Bartos

recommends :

  • Cut back potted plants and initially place them near the wall of the house (later a bright spot in the hallway, conservatory or greenhouse is also possible).

  • Hardy potted plants also need frost protection: cover the soil with leaves or a coconut fiber root disc.

Gardening in October: clear the lawn of leaves and fertilize

Fallen leaves may look beautiful, but over time they will damage the lawn.

Fungal diseases can spread under the moist layer of leaves.

In order to keep the lawn healthy and well prepared for the winter, you should therefore remove the leaves from the green and apply an autumn lawn fertilizer by October at the latest.

The latter makes the lawn more resistant to frost.
