(ANSA) - TEL AVIV - A 46-year-old Israeli woman became a mother after thawing a part of her ovary that 20 had previously frozen due to a tumor.
And the pregnancy was achieved without resorting to IVF despite the woman's current menopause.
The case was reported by Times of Israel citing prof.
Ariel Revel, the lady's gynecologist, says it is "a world record".
"She conceived spontaneously at the age of 45 and now - explained Revel - she has a baby thanks to parts of her ovary that have been in liquid nitrogen for two decades".
The parts of the ovary were then transplanted into the woman when she decided to have a new child.
"Not only - she added - this is a world record, but it also carries the possibility that in the future a woman can regularly conceive much more by freezing her ovaries in her 20 years of her".
According to Revel, the discovery that the ovaries can be transplanted after such a long time of freezing could lead to "a revision of the current guidelines" which now only provide for it in cases of serious illness of the woman.
