The Vereinigung Cockpit pilots' union went on strike on Thursday - Eurowings aircraft remained on the ground.

Passengers need to know that now.

Düsseldorf – Everyone who booked a flight with Eurowings on Thursday (October 6) needs strong nerves.

Pilots at the Lufthansa subsidiary have been called on to go on strike, and according to the airline, every second Eurowings aircraft remains on the ground.

But what happens if your own flight is cancelled?

What claims and rights do you have as a passenger?

Here we answer the most important questions.

Eurowings strike: Compensation payments of up to 600 euros are possible

In general, the following applies first: In the event of delays and cancellations due to a pilot strike, as is the case on Thursday, there are various claims.

Among other things, on substitute transport, meals, accommodation and sometimes also on compensation payments under the EU Air Passenger Rights Regulation in the amount of 250 to 600 euros.

If the flight is delayed by

more than three hours

, the airline must offer alternative transportation.

Either another flight can be offered and alternatively a train ticket.

If the flight is

canceled completely

, passengers can also ask for money back.

However, everyone must then take care of themselves how to reach their destination.

By the way: If the flight is part of a package tour, the contact person is the tour operator and not the airline.

Eurowings strike: These websites are helpful

Before the nerves at the airport are completely blank, it may be helpful to find out about the rights in advance.

For example, the websites of consumer centers or Stiftung Warentest explain passenger rights in detail.

With the Flugärger app, the Verbraucherzentrale NRW offers a practical mobile application for the smartphone, with which claims can be checked free of charge.

And the European Consumer Center also supports passengers with a browser-based self-help tool for flight problems.

It was not until the end of July that a strike by ground staff paralyzed Lufthansa flight operations, including at Munich Airport.
