A week after the annexation referendums by Moscow in four regions, the European Union agreed on Wednesday on a new series of sanctions against Russia.

The agreement was concluded at the level of the ambassadors of the Twenty-Seven.

The names and entities targeted by these new sanctions are to be published in the EU's Official Journal on Thursday, diplomats said.

These sanctions come as Russian President Vladimir Putin signed this Wednesday the law of annexation of four Ukrainian regions and the decrees formally appointing at their head the leaders that Moscow had already put in place.

The texts signed by the Russian leader stipulate that the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia are accepted "into the Russian Federation".

At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed Tuesday evening "powerful" advances by his army in southern Ukraine, referring to "dozens" of localities taken over.

In passing, he also thanked his counterpart Joe Biden for the “continuous military and financial support” of the United States in the face of the Russian invasion during a telephone conversation.
