The office wrote to the refugee Reza R. that he should come by to register his employment. But instead, the Iranian was arrested. After protests, the case is now being re-examined.

Dealing with an Iranian refugee in Lower Bavaria has triggered outrage.

According to his lawyer, the Bavarian Refugee Council, the district administrator and the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, the case can be reconstructed as follows: Reza R. has been working as an intern in a nursing home for six months, and the 41-year-old should be taken on permanently at the beginning of October, the employment contract he had already submitted to the authorities.

A clerk from the district office wrote R. an email on September 26 and invited him to the office for September 29.

There, she wrote to him, his employment should be registered.

R. went to the appointment.

But two plainclothes police officers were waiting at the office and arrested him.

The refugee was heard in court and then taken to Eichstätt in custody pending deportation.

There, according to his lawyer Maral Noruzi, he stayed for six days in a six square meter room.

He was allowed to leave it for 15 minutes a day.

The flight to Iran should start this Wednesday.

However, according to media reports, the authorities have suspended the deportation at the urging of politicians.

R. was allowed to leave custody late Tuesday afternoon.

The "Süddeutsche Zeitung" and the "Passauer Neue Presse" had first reported on the case.

Stephan Dünnwald, spokesman for the Bavarian Refugee Council, told SPIEGEL: "The authorities let R. believe that he would get a work permit.

Even though she knew he wouldn't get her." It's common for refugees to be made to believe they're safe over the phone, but it's stupid that it was done in writing.

"It's a scandal we can call that."

The district office confirmed to SPIEGEL "that an arrest for the purpose of deportation took place at the end of last week in the immigration office."

Such arrests should not be announced, “especially if there is a suspicion that the person who is obliged to leave the country could avoid deportation”.

In principle, the prospect of employment alone does not justify a right of residence.

The clerk was not yet aware of a date for the deportation.

In this respect, she did not present any false facts.

The district office had been asked by the Ministry of the Interior to suspend the deportation until the case was reviewed again.

R. has now lost his Duldung, according to Stephan Dünnwald from the Refugee Council, he only has a border crossing certificate.

"He's not even allowed to continue his internship in nursing with this," says Dünnwald.

He now hopes that the immigration authorities will examine R's case again and give him the prospect of a work permit.

The Bavarian Ministry of the Interior states: "In the present case, the decisions under immigration law must be carefully reviewed again".

The ministry has asked the immigration authorities to refrain from deportation until the review is complete.
