The imposter Anna Sorokin, who has been in custody in the United States for over a year, is to be released from prison for the time being.

Sorokin, known from the Netflix series »Inventing Anna«, paid a $10,000 bail, was electronically monitored around the clock and was not allowed to use social media, as several media reports.

Sorokin was arrested in 2021 because she no longer had a valid US visa.

The house arrest should now apply until a decision has been made about her case and a possible "removal" of Sorokin to Germany.

"We are very relieved by the court's decision to fire Anna Sorokin," Sorokin's attorney told Variety.

Before her arrest, she was already serving a US prison sentence because her visa had expired.

In 2019, Sorokin was sentenced to a long prison term for fraud, but she was released after two years for good behavior.

The great swindle began in New York

The case caused a stir, also because Netflix filmed Sorokin's life story.

Sorokin came to New York City in 2013, and the big scam began in the US metropolis.

Sorokin posed as Anna Delvey and said she was a wealthy heiress.

Through clever lies and self-confidence, between November 2016 and August 2017, she managed to get tens of thousands of dollars in loans from various banks, travel for free on private planes and live in luxury hotels in Manhattan for months without paying the bills settle

Definitely prevent repatriation

She also attempted to start a hybrid nightclub/art gallery by borrowing $22 million using forged documents.

The US authorities had previously tried several times to deport Sorokin to Germany - but all attempts failed.

In US security circles it was said that Sorokin apparently wanted to prevent the return to her homeland at all costs, since she would then never be able to return to the USA due to a lifelong entry ban.

Because of the lawsuit, the US authorities do not want to make any further attempts to return Sorokin to Germany for the time being.
