Iris Cole interviews Prof. Ido Wolf of Ichilov about the developments in the field of cancer (Walla system!)

Everyone is aware that smoking is one of the most unhealthy habits.

Now the UK National Screening Commission (UKNSC) has called for lung cancer screening to be offered across the UK to anyone over 55 who has ever smoked.

The commission said that all former and current smokers between the ages of 55 and 74 should be invited to be evaluated by doctors.

Anyone who is considered to be at high risk for lung cancer will be offered a CT scan that creates a 3D image of the inside of the body.

Lung cancer is the most common cancer in the world and the third most common in Israel.

According to the data, a third of cancer deaths in Israel are attributed to it, and every year it affects about 2,000 new people, of which 15 to 20 percent are non-smokers and have never smoked.

Dr Ian Walker, Cancer Research UK's director of policy, said: "We welcome this recommendation and call on governments in all four UK countries to launch a targeted lung cancer screening program as quickly as possible.

Lung cancer causes more deaths in the UK than any other cancer, and screening can save lives by diagnosing people at an earlier stage - when treatment is more likely to be successful."

The new health advice means earlier detection and higher chances of survival. As with the diagnosis of All types of cancer, even in the case of lung cancer, early diagnosis can save lives.

The chances of survival for lung cancer patients are not good, as many cases are detected late, experts have warned.

More than half of people with stage one lung cancer live five years or more after diagnosis, but fewer than five in 100 patients with stage four disease live five years from their diagnosis.

According to the data of the Cancer Society, cigarette smoking is the leading and most critical risk factor for the development of lung cancer.

Active or passive cigarette smoking is the cause of about 80 percent of lung cancer deaths.

The more you smoke or are around smokers, the higher the risk of lung cancer, but also other types of cancer.

80-90 percent of people with lung cancer are current smokers or have smoked in the past.

According to a new study, 61 percent of cancer cases a year could be prevented if people stopped smoking.
