(ANSA) - REGGIO CALABRIA, 06 OCT - Operation of the Financial Police for the execution of a precautionary custody order issued by the district investigating judge of Reggio Calabria, upon request of the Dda, against 36 people accused of having managed an international trafficking in narcotic substances , with the aggravating circumstance of the mafia modalities, which would have had as baselogistics the port of Gioia Tauro.

The restrictive measures in execution were issued at the request of the Attorney of Reggio Calabria, Giovanni Bombardieri, and of the deputy Giuseppe Lombardo.


   Among the people arrested there is also an official of the Customs Agency, whose identity has not been disclosed at the moment, who was on duty in the office set up by the Agency in the port of Gioia Tauro and who in the past has collaborated countless times with the Finance Police on the occasion of the many drug seizures carried out.

For 34 of the 36 recipients of the pre-trial detention order, pre-trial detention was ordered, while two were granted the benefit of home arrest.

Furthermore, movable and immovable property for a value of seven million euros was seized.

Among the beneficiaries is the corporate assets of two companies in the transport sector.


   The operation involved, in addition to the province of ReggioCalabria, those of Milan, Rome, Naples, Bari, Terni, Vicenza and Novara.

The Gico and the economic and financial police unit of Reggio Calabria participated in the operation, with the commitment of over 300 soldiers from the Guardia di Finanza.

In the context of the investigations that led to the arrests, over four tons of cocaine were seized, for a retail value of approximately 800 million euros.
