(ANSA) - NEW YORK, OCTOBER 06 - They fled Russia aboard a small boat, crossed part of the Bering straits and landed in Alaska, where they sought asylum from the United States.
The two Russian citizens told the villagers of Gambell, on the island of Lawrence, that they fled their country to escape the partial mobilization wanted by Vladimir Putin for the war in Ukraine.
Disembarked amid the disbelief of the inhabitants of Gambell, a village with fewer than 500 residents, the two told their adventure: they fled the city of Egvekinot, in northeastern Russia, and traveled to Alaska.
The two were transferred to Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, for the necessary checks.
Their requests for asylum are currently under examination, the American authorities report.
