Unusual shark birth (Reuters)

Despite the fact that sharks are one of the most common fish in the ocean, it turns out that not everyone knows how these sea creatures start their lives, and what they look like as eggs.

This discovery came to light after a fisherman left 34 million viewers stunned with a clip in which he documents how he came across a shark egg washed ashore.

The fisherman took it upon himself to document the process in which he saves the egg from drying out in the sunlight.

In the caption of the post, he wrote: "I found this little production in a swamp on the beach! I brought it home to put it in an aquarium in the hope that when it grows up and comes out I can release it back into the wild. It would have dried up and died if I hadn't found it."

Admit that you didn't know that this is what a shark's egg looks like!

Surprisingly, only 25 percent of sharks lay eggs, and as the clip documents, part of the process involves releasing the egg inside a "mermaid's vagina."

This process is designed to protect the baby shark during its development.

The rest of the sharks carry live births in their bellies, with the mother spawning when they are fully developed and ready for an independent life and in some cases they even devour their siblings in their bellies.

The viewers were shocked by the discovery and most of them said that they had no idea what a shark egg looked like.

"I thought it was one of those key chains they sell with sea animals inside," laughed one commenter, another added: "I thought it was a gummy candy in the shape of a Coke bottle."

A third said: "I really thought it was an ad for a jewelry company or something like that at first."

Wednesday concluded: "I had no idea that a shark's egg looked like this. I looked it up on Google, I'm 30 years old and I never knew it."

@zoo_look_fishing Our little friend is still alive and well!

After the original clip reached more than 2 million views, the fisherman added an update with another video.

"Our friend is still alive and doing well. I really hope he survives and that I can return him to the ocean," he assured viewers.

He put the egg into an aquarium, which serves as his new home.

"A lot of people asked me why I didn't return him to the ocean, I was afraid he would be washed away again and dry up. It's only been a few days but he's grown nicely and is getting stronger and just fine. I hope he survives and that I can share in the process."
