5 facts about tattoos (Walla! News system)

Do you have a phobia of needles?

Afraid to get a tattoo because it hurts?

Soon you will be able to get tattooed in seconds and without any pain with the help of a sticker.

Scientists have developed a new technology in the form of a skin patch that has very small needles - smaller than grains of sand - that can be stuck to the skin and create a tattoo.

Although the stickers still have needles, they are microscopic and almost imperceptible compared to the normal needle used for tattoos.

There is no pain and no blood, the experts promise.

"While some people are willing to take the pain and time required to get a tattoo, we thought others might prefer a tattoo that simply sticks to the skin and doesn't hurt," said lead researcher Professor Mark Prausnitz.

The small needles can be arranged in different designs, words, symbols - anything you want - to create your personalized tattoo.

They can even be made to respond to environmental factors such as changes in light or temperature.

Using tattoo stickers is also a faster process: the sticker is pressed onto the body - similar to how one would apply temporary tattoo paper - and then the microneedles dissolve.

A few minutes later the ink sinks into the skin.

You can even do it yourself and there is no need for a tattoo shop.

"Because the microneedles are made of tattoo ink, they deposit the ink in the skin very efficiently," said Dr. Song Lee, senior research scientist at Micron Biomedical and co-author of the study published in iScience. Dr. Fraunitz added: "We reduced the The needle so that it is painless, but still embeds tattoo ink in the skin."

Besides the advantage of not having to sit under the needle, these tattoo stickers are less invasive, which means there is less risk of infection.

While the study found that the tattoos are likely to be permanent, they can also be done with temporary tattoo ink for those who don't want to make that decision.

While some will be excited that the new technology will finally help them get tattooed painlessly, the skin stickers could also help the medical field.

Tattoos are often used to guide repeated radiation treatments for cancer, cover scars, and are also associated with serious medical conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes or allergies.

The environmental response effect allows patients some privacy and can hide the tattoo unless it is under ultraviolet lights or high temperatures.

The non-invasive tattoos can also be used to help pets.

Instead of cutting off the ears and affixing ear tags, veterinarians can painlessly tattoo important information—such as whether the animal has been spayed or neutered—directly onto the animal's skin.

Although these skin stickers may be revolutionary and particularly attractive to the consumer, the researchers do not want to discredit the hard work of the tattoo artists.

"The goal is not to replace all tattoos, which are often works of art created by tattoo artists," said Dr. Prausnitz, "Our goal is to create new opportunities for patients, pets and people who want a painless tattoo that can be done easily."
