Mareike Krügel and Jan Christophersen have written a loving travel guide of a different kind that awakens a longing for the north.

My book tip.

The "Moin" heard in northern Germany is sufficient.

"Moin Moin" is almost too much of a good thing.

So if you don't want to be exposed as a tourist right away, you should take this to heart.

What other blunders there are to avoid in the far north, the historical similarities to Denmark and the geological conditions that shaped the country - all of this can be found in this "instruction manual" in a way that is worth reading.

Between the toes of Schlick: Mareike Krügel and Jan Christophersen are at home where others go on vacation and write a passionate declaration of love to Germany's north.

They tell of life between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, of proud cities by the sea, of Kiel, Lübeck, Flensburg and Husum.

From everyday life on the water, from the Wadden Sea and the Halligen, North Sea islands, Fehmarn and Helgoland - and from the weather report as the most popular small talk topic.

About bog corpses and other sights, about Vikings and opponents of wind power, Theodor Storm and Emil Nolde, about typical North German customs and clichés, sailor's yarn and Platt.

From Pharisees, fish rolls and turnip puree, dead aunts, blushing virgins and other culinary specialties.

Books from the "Instructions for Use" series have been around for years.

At the beginning it was country descriptions, I still remember my first reading experience with “Instructions for Great Britain”, but now federal states or islands (“Instructions for Sylt”) have their very own book version.

The attraction of immersing yourself in a new region remains undiminished.

One could easily connect these “Instructions for Use for Schleswig-Holstein” to Dörte Hansen's “Zur See” or read them parallel to Heinz Strunk's “Ein Sommer in Niendorf”.

Mareike Krügel and her husband, Jan Christophersen, have been struggling with the idea of a book about their home country for a number of years.

The result is a varied reading, in which one of the two has taken over a chapter.

Mareike Krügel is more responsible for loving side swipes, while Jan Christophersen is responsible for all topics relating to "language" and "history".

The variety in the chapters is like the tides: sometimes calm, sometimes a little more lively.

The peculiarities of the people of Schleswig-Holstein are well illuminated and questioned.

I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to think outside the box and go on holiday in their own country.

Mareike Krügel, Jan Christophersen "Instructions for use for Schleswig-Holstein": My conclusion

With "Instructions for Schleswig-Holstein" you don't get a travel guide with detailed descriptions of places and insider tips.

You get a readable and affectionate overview of the history, the language, the development and the peculiarities of the northernmost federal state, peppered with humorous sideswipes.

It doesn't need more.
