"We will miss her sorely": Pebbles is dead – according to the Guinness Book of Records, she was the oldest living dog in the world.
The Toy Fox Terrier dog died of natural causes at her home on October 3 at the age of 22, her owner Julie Gregory said on Instagram.
The animal was born on March 28, 2000 Long Island, New York State and has spent most of its life with Julie and Bobby Gregory in South Carolina.
Over the course of her long life, Pebbles, weighing around two kilograms, gave birth to 32 puppies.
Guinness World Records named the animal the oldest living dog in the world last May.
For her owners, however, Pebbles was much more than just a record holder: "She was a unique companion and was honored to have had her as a pet and family member," wrote Gregory.
"There wasn't anyone who met Pebbles who didn't love her."
Gregory attributed the bitch's health to the care of the animal, which she carried out "with the greatest care".
The oldest dog ever recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records is an Australian Cattle Dog named Bluey: he was 29 years old when he died in 1939.
