(ANSA) - ROME - New diagnostic possibilities, accurate and safe for small patients with complex cardiac anomalies, thanks to the expertise of the Child Jesus of Rome: an MRI, no X-rays, maximum precision and a single anesthesia.

The cutting-edge method, called "magnetic resonance guided diagnostic catheterization", was successfully performed for the first time in Italy on the first patients at the Pediatric Hospital of the Holy See: two children aged 5 and 7 and a boy of 21 years affected, respectively, by complex congenital heart disease, relapsing myocarditis, univentricular heart.

After the intervention to refine their diagnosis, also essential for establishing the best therapeutic procedures on a case-by-case basis, the three patients had a rapid recovery.

Magnetic resonance guided diagnostic catheterization is an innovative procedure for diagnosing heart defects in children;

uses magnetic fields instead of radiation to obtain high-precision results.

Many advantages for children: shorter and single anesthesia, one-time procedure and no exposure to X-rays. The Baby Jesus specialists forecast at least 20 procedures of this type per year for the accurate diagnosis of patients with selected congenital heart disease and / or pulmonary hypertension.

Until now, a double procedure was used to measure with extreme precision the anatomy of the defect and a series of cardiovascular parameters (pressure, saturation, blood flow): cardiac catheterization with radiation (using vascular catheters, flexible tubes that reach the heart of the patient through blood vessels) and MRI examination.

Both procedures often require anesthesia of the patient.

First, diagnostic cardiac catheterization is performed in the hemodynamic room using X-ray instruments. Later, even after 1 or 2 days, the patient is transferred to the magnetic resonance room to complete the investigation with detailed data only detectable with this technology (e.g. blood flows).

The examination, in fact, is performed in one place - the resonance room: this guides the interventional cardiologist in the catheterization maneuvers and, at the same time, measures all the cardiovascular parameters necessary for diagnosis with extreme precision.

The procedure is coordinated by the specialists of the complex structures of Interventional Cardiology and Advanced Cardiovascular Radiology of the Pediatric Hospital of the Holy See.

"The exam is even safer and less invasive for children" underlines Gianfranco Butera, head of Interventional Cardiology.

"Without moving between rooms the risk of altering important parameters is reduced; the procedure is shorter, the anesthesia times are reduced and the patient is not exposed to ionizing radiation".
